A London man faces charges after provincial police in Chatham-Kent were alerted to an allegedly drunk, wrong way driver on Hwy. 401.
Around 3:20 a.m. on Saturday, September 7, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) got several calls about a vehicle going west in the eastbound lanes of Hwy. 401 near Orford Road in Chatham-Kent.
"Shortly after the initial reports, police received an additional report indicating that the vehicle had turned around and was now travelling the correct direction, eastbound on the Highway 401," police said in a media release issued Monday. "At approximately 3:35 a.m., police located and stopped the vehicle on the eastbound Highway 401 near Graham Road, Municipality of West Elgin."
According to police, the officer who stopped the driver noticed "signs of intoxication." The driver was arrested and taken to the OPP detachment in St. Thomas for more testing.
A 36-year-old London man is charged with impaired driving.
He is to appear in court in St. Thomas on October 7.
"The OPP would like to take this opportunity to thank the individuals who contacted police and reported this incident. As a direct result, officers were able to safely locate the vehicle and take the driver into custody without incident," police said.
