CK police dog, drones track down hit-and-run suspect from Sarnia

A 26-year-old Sarnia man who allegedly ran from the scene of a crash just east of Chatham is facing impaired driving charges.

Chatham-Kent police said they were called to the scene of the two-vehicle collision at around 7:45 a.m. Tuesday and learned that a car that was heading east on Longwoods Road in Louisville had veered into the westbound lane and hit an oncoming vehicle.

Police said the car in the westbound lane ended up going off the road and stopped next to a field.

The driver of that vehicle reported "physical injuries" but police did not release the severity of those injuries.

Officers said a man involved in the collision took off running before police arrived, but they were able to track him down about two kilometres west of the collision site after deploying the K9 unit and police drones.

CK police said further investigation showed the man was believed to be intoxicated by a substance and that he was also wanted by the Sarnia Police Service.

He was taken to police headquarters and evaluated by a drug recognition expert before he was charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident, impaired driving causing bodily harm, and failing/refusing to comply with a demand.

The man was later released with conditions and a future court date and was also issued a summons for driving without a valid driver’s license.
