CK Salvation Army misses 2024 fundraising goal by a whisker

The Salvation Army of Chatham-Kent fell short of its fundraising goal this year.

Major Larry Bridger told CK News Today the 2024 campaign raised approximately $501,000, about $49,000 short of the $550,000 goal.

Major Bridger said the month-long Canada Post strike had some effect on the donations, but believes the current tough economic conditions played a significant role in getting fewer donations this year.

The Major doesn't anticipate any changes or drastic cuts in the many services provided because of the shortfall.

"We've done relatively well. The people of Chatham-Kent really have come through very, very well given the economy and so on. We're quite pleased with the results so far," said Major Bridger.

Bridger also doesn't anticipate any changes forthcoming to the campaign or the fundraising model, at least not in the immediate future.

When asked if he feels the local Salvation Army food banks under his jurisdiction are being abused or being used as grocery stores he answered a resounding no.

"I think people are finding it tough when it comes to groceries, but I don't really think they're using us so much. At least the vast majority are coming to us because they're legitimately in need and not just abusing the system," he noted.

Bridger also said a different fundraising goal may be considered for the 2025 campaign, depending on what happens over the next few months.

The Salvation Army operates food banks in Chatham, Wallaceburg, Blenheim, and Ridgetown.

Donations are welcome at any Salvation Army location and debit and credit is accepted at the church office at 46 Orangewood Blvd. in Chatham or the Salvation Army Thrift Store at 456 St. Clair St. in Chatham.
