Break-in suspects tow away 200lb safe with a bicycle trailer

Two Chatham-Kent residents are facing charges after a break-in on Grand Avenue West involving a pair of pedal-powered getaway vehicles.

Chatham-Kent police said their investigation started when a glass break alarm was triggered at a property on Grand Avenue West in Chatham at around 4:45 a.m. on Sunday.

Investigators said two suspects had stolen a 200lb safe that contained various items, adding that it was believed they hauled the safe away with bicycles and a trailer. The damage was estimated at $1,500.

Police were able to identify one of the suspects as a 39-year-old Chatham-Kent man who had a previous encounter with police that same night.

Officers also reviewed some CCTV footage that showed four suspects together near a convenience store before the alarm investigation.

Police said the 39-year-old man they were looking for was found hiding in a residence and was arrested for breaking and entering and theft.

Officers also arrested a second suspect, a 51-year-old Dover Township man, and police said both of the accused confessed to the crime.

Police were able to recover the stolen safe with the various items and both of the accused were later released with future court dates.
