CK Council talks a little trash Monday night

The Community of South Buxton should soon have one less chore to do next month if Chatham-Kent Council approves municipal curbside waste collection for the small town.

Curbside trash pickup for the community just east of Merlin is set to start February 17, 2025, but it'll cost South Buxton property owners more for the proposed service, if Council approves the change.

The added garbage pickup would cost $6,495, $6,640, and $6,785, in 2025, 2026, and 2027, respectively and would be funded through an area tax levy.

South Buxton residents have been dropping off their trash at the municipal waste drop-off depot.

Chatham-Kent Manager of Waste Management Huda Oda said a request for curbside service from a property owner in August triggered a petition process and in October, a successful petition containing signatures of 57 per cent of the impacted property owners was submitted.

Oda noted 35 of the 45 properties within the community boundaries are currently eligible for the municipal curbside waste collection.

Residents will continue to have depot access to drop-off recycling throughout 2025 until a new recycling program starts in 2026.
