Rainfall warning in effect

An approaching weather system, known as a Colorado low, has led Environment Canada to issue rainfall warnings across southwestern and midwestern Ontario.

The rainfall warnings are in effect for areas including Bruce County, Grey County, Huron County, Perth County, Sarnia-Lambton, Chatham-Kent, Windsor and Essex County, Elgin County, and Middlesex County. Environment Canada says the rain is expected to start falling on Wednesday morning, and by the time it is done early Thursday morning, up to 50 millimetres may have fallen. Areas that see repeated thunderstorms could see even more than that.

"The ground, already near saturation, has little ability to absorb further rainfall," Environment Canada said. "Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads."

The anticipated rain has led conservation authorities in the region to issue flood advisories. Residents are urged to stay away from the banks of rivers, streams, and other waterways.
