A local man who has led schools in Sarnia and Chatham-Kent will soon step into a new role as superintendent of education of the Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB).
The school board recently announced that as of April 14, Eryn Smit will be the superintendent of education for Indigenous education/equity, diversity, inclusion, and justice.
“I am honoured to step into this position and look forward to working collaboratively with our staff, students, families, and community partners," said Smit in a statement. "Together, we will continue to foster inclusive and supportive learning environments where every student can thrive.”
In his new role, Smit will be tasked with advancing strategic initiatives, promoting anti-oppressive education, acting as a liaison with First Nation partners, overseeing the Ministry of Education's Board Indigenous Action Plan, and developing community partnerships.
“We are thrilled to welcome [Smit] as our new superintendent of education,” said LKDSB’s incoming Director of Education Gary Girardi. “[Smit’s] dedication to equity, diversity, and inclusion, along with a proven track record of leadership and innovation, will be invaluable as we continue to build on our strategic priorities and support the success of every student, every day."
Smit is currently the principal at Cathcart Boulevard Public School in Sarnia. He was previously the principal at P.E. McGibbon Public School, Victor Lauriston Public School in Chatham, and Zone Township Central School in Bothwell.
The school board said Smit has experience in other leadership roles with the Ontario Principals’ Council and coordinating the Indigenous Teacher Education Program through Queen's University.
He holds a Master of Professional Education in educational leadership from Western University and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto.
