Chatham man charged after wild adventure

A Chatham man is facing several charges after getting arrested twice in the span of three hours.

Chatham-Kent police reported arresting and charging the 44-year-old suspect with impaired driving after he was found unconscious behind the wheel in a parking lot at a business on St. Clair Street in Chatham around noon on Thursday.

Police alleged that officers found drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle, adding that a drug recognition evaluation expert identified that the alleged impairment was caused by a central nervous system stimulant and a narcotic analgesic.

Three hours later, CK police noted that the same man was arrested again after a theft complaint on Grand Avenue West in Chatham.

According to police, they were told that a man was in the basement hallway of the building where he allegedly attempted to steal various items.

The suspect tried to flee the scene when he was confronted by security and allegedly struck someone, police said.

The 44-year-old Chatham man is now facing assault, theft, and obstruction charges on top of the impaired driving by drugs charge.
