Catholic church elects first American Pontiff

Cheers erupted in St. Peter's Square Thursday as white smoke came out of the Sistine Chapel.

Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, 69, from Chicago, Illinois was revealed on the balcony of the St. Peter's Basilica.

He will become Pope Leo XIV.

This is the first time an American has been elected as pope.

The new pope was elected at 6:10 p.m., local time, 12:10 p.m. EST.

The 133 cardinal electors spent two days at the conclave electing the next pope.

He was chosen after Pope Francis died on April 21 from a stroke and irreversible heart disease.

His funeral was held on April 26 and he was laid to rest at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major.

Pope Francis was chosen in 2013 and served 12 years in the role.
