The search for a missing swimmer in the Thames River in Chatham has ended in tragedy.
Chatham-Kent police said two teen girls jumped off the Third Street Bridge and into the water early in the morning on Monday but only one of them survived.
Police said a 15-year-old girl was safely taken to the shore by first responders but they couldn't find the 17-year-old girl who jumped into the water with her.
The search for the second girl continued all day Monday with search and rescue teams still out on the water into the evening hours.
CK police said an aerial drone, the Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue boat, the Chatham-Kent Police Marine Unit, members of the Emergency Response Team, and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) helicopter and Dive Team were all involved in the search.
The body of the 17-year-old was later recovered.
Police said the incident is not considered suspicious but they are still urging anyone with information to contact Detective Dan Hamilton at danha@chatham-kent.ca, or by calling 519-436-6600 ext. 80284.
CK police are also extending their condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
