UPDATE: Wheatley library closed until further notice after gas leak

The Chatham-Kent Public Library branch in Wheatley is closed until further notice.

The building and book return have been closed due to a gas leak near the back of the property.

The library was expected to reopen on Thursday, July 3, exactly a week after the leak was found, but another leak was detected on Canada Day.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is currently investigating the property to ensure it's safe before fully committing to a return date.

Around 60 homes were forced to evacuate after the first gas leak out of fear that a similar explosion like in 2021 could happen. However, residents were allowed to return home the next day.

A second leak was confirmed on Tuesday, July 1, but no evaluation was ordered, and the gas had stopped a few hours later.
