Gas main repairs underway after rupture in downtown Wheatley

Crews are repairing a broken gas main in downtown Wheatley.

On Wednesday at 1:30 p.m., the Municipality of Chatham-Kent reported that a contractor performing work on the demolition underway at 24 Erie Street North struck and ruptured a gas main.

Enbridge crews are making repairs and municipal crews and Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue are on scene.

CK Fire will be conducting precautionary air monitoring to ensure ongoing public safety.

Erie Street North will remain closed until the main can be repaired, according to the municipality.

Municipal officials noted this incident is unrelated to gas and water wells.

The demolition work started on Monday and is expected to last two weeks.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
