Province steps in to deal with gas in Wheatley

Residents and visitors to Wheatley are being asked to avoid the area of Chestnut Street and Erie Street South following the detection of gas.

The Province of Ontario has hired Rimkus to investigate and deal with the issue.

Site preparation and equipment mobilization will begin on Monday, with work slated to start on Wednesday.

The site is nearby, but separate from the one discovered behind the Wheatley library.

"The library well has been plugged and work completed," municipal officials told CK News Today. "Ongoing monthly monitoring of the well will determine if any other action is required."

The library remains open, as experts maintain that there is no risk to public health and safety from the abandoned well at this time.
