UCC students restock food bank shelves

A convoy was needed to transport food donations from Ursuline College Chatham (UCC) to Chatham Outreach for Hunger.

Brenda LeClair, the food bank's Executive Director, said that they are overwhelmed by the response to this year's food drive.

"It was fantastic," she shared. "On Monday, truck after truck after truck kept rolling up to our doors with skids of food."

UCC's annual food drive, 'Lancers Scare Hunger,' took place on Halloween. Student volunteers fanned out across Chatham that night to collect non-perishable food donations.

According to the St. Clair Catholic District School Board (SCCDSB), this year's contributions filled the school's foyer and lined the main hallway.

Multiple vehicles, including a cube van, SUVs, and pickup trucks, were required to haul the donations from the school to the Outreach for Hunger warehouse.

LeClair explained that the student volunteers didn't only collect the food, they also unloaded it and stocked the warehouse shelves.

The food drive is the biggest of the year for the food bank and comes just in time for the holiday season.

"The timing couldn't be better," LeClair said. "Our supplies were getting pretty low, but now we're in good shape as we head into the Christmas season."
