Shoreline statement issued due to high winds in forecast

A period of high winds will affect Windsor-Essex, leading to a shoreline conditions statement.

The Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) issued the statement on Thursday evening for the Lake Erie shoreline and Pelee Island, due to the potential of northeast wind gusts reaching 60 kilometres per hour.

Winds were expected to pick up overnight, with sustained speeds approaching 45 kilometres per hour. Direction is expected to change to east-northeast and east by Friday night.

"The areas of the region most affected by these winds are anticipated to be the shoreline area between Wheatley Harbour and Point Pelee National Park in the Municipality of Leamington and the east shoreline of Pelee Island in Lake Erie," said ERCA Water Resources Engineer Tian Martin.

Although lake levels are lower this season, there is still the potential for shoreline erosion and debris due to increased wave activity along the lakeshore.

The statement is in effect until Saturday at 6 p.m.
