Cherryfest a go despite wildfire smoke

Blenheim Cherryfest is going ahead this weekend, despite air quality warnings.

Organizers say if you plan to attend, be mindful of the air quality and take any precautions that are appropriate for you. They will continue to monitor the situation and share updates if conditions change.

An orange air quality warning is in effect for Chatham-Kent due to smoke from wildfires in Northwestern Ontario. The poor air quality is expected to continue through Friday, July 17.

The 43rd annual Cherryfest and Sidewalk Days is taking place on Talbot Street between Chatham St. and Marlborough St. until Saturday.

In addition to a midway and sidewalk sales, there is the Battle of the Bands on Thursday night, live music on Friday and Saturday, a cherry pie baking contest, a cherry pie auction, and a cherry pie eating contest on Saturday.

Cherry pit spit tryouts are on Friday, and the Canadian National pit spitting contest is Saturday at 1 p.m.

Cherry Central will be serving up cherry treats and collecting donations for the food bank.

A free shuttle service is available from Sobeys and will run every 30 minutes.
