An investigation is underway to find out how a six-week-old puppy in Chatham was found seizing from drugs.
Little Debbie was brought to the Pet & Wildlife Rescue (PAWR) on Thursday.
She had to be sedated for multiple days as she was seizing uncontrollably, with the episodes happening only seconds apart.
Tests revealed she had cocaine and amphetamines in her system.
"We've had animals come in [poisoned] or with an allergic reaction to something, or a just plain medical condition that causes seizures, but this is the first time we've had such a young puppy come to us with this kind of substance in her system," said Myriam Armstrong, executive director of PAWR.
As soon as the drugs were out of her system, Little Debbie stopped seizing. Unfortunately, the large number of seizures has caused her to go blind, with Armstrong saying there's a 50/50 chance she'll remain so.
Besides not being able to see, Little Debbie is expected to make a full recovery.
"The first three days were dodgy, but she's already gained all of her functions," added Armstrong.
Armstrong joked that the puppy might have to relearn how to walk as everyone she's met since recovering keeps picking her up and holding her like a baby.
Moving forward, Armstrong is hoping to find Little Debbie a forever home. Due to the ordeal she went through, the plan is to put her in the foster-to-adopt program.
"The whole point is we don't bounce her from home to home," explained Armstrong.
As for the investigation, Armstrong couldn't share any details. She did note that multiple organizations are looking into the situation alongside PAWR.
Armstrong did explain that there's no information to suggest that Little Debbie was living on the streets with someone addicted to drugs.
