People driving near downtown Chatham may notice a new art piece.
A mural featuring an eastern redbud tree and monarch butterflies has been created to recognize the work done at the Chatham-Kent Hospice over the past 10 years.
The tree mirrors the one planted in the hospice's courtyard, while butterflies represent the journey of life.
"For some of the families we have been honoured to care for, the connection between these symbols is especially meaningful, as they had the opportunity to release butterflies in the courtyard during their time with us," said Jessica Smith, Executive Director of Chatham-Kent Hospice.
The mural was funded through the Councillor Ward Funding program, specifically from Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Canniff and Ward 6 Councillor Marjorie Crew.
The piece was created by artist Kelsey Van Raay.
"As Chatham-Kent Hospice looks toward the future, the mural will remain a permanent reminder of its first decade — rooted in community, shaped by the people we care for and carried forward through stories of love, compassion and remembrance," added Smith.
