St. Clair College christens its new humanoid

St. Clair College has announced that its Unitree R1 Humanoid finally has a name.

At an event on Thursday at the main campus in South Windsor, it was revealed as Clairion.

The announcement was the climax of a two-month contest among the College's student body.

Clairion commented on their new name at the event.

"Now that is a name! CLAIRION. Cognitive Learning Artificial Intelligence Robotic Innovation and Operations Network. Quite a mouthful for someone who doesn't even have lungs!" Clairion said.

The humanoid was bought by the College's Research and Innovation department with a grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

Clairion has already appeared at manufacturing facilities across Windsor-Essex, demonstrating how humanoid technology could enhance existing operations, improve efficiencies, and potentially transform certain processes. The humanoid has also appeared at the College's Robotics Club and Data Analytics program.

John Lopez, the College's Program Manager for Research and Innovation, says Clairion is the first of its kind in North America.

"Initiatives like this help position St. Clair College at the forefront of cutting-edge technology and innovation," said Lopez. "We're excited about the possibilities ahead and look forward to seeing how Clairion evolves and what new opportunities and advancements will come from this."

Mohammad Alkhateb, a first-year student in the Protection, Security and Investigation program, won a $200 bookstore gift card and St. Clair College apparel for submitting the winning name.

Clairion will make an appearance at the Fall Open House on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the main Windsor campus.
