Sports Briefs - September 12, 2016

The Detroit Lions won their season-opening game in dramatic fashion. After missing an extra point, Lions kicker Matt Prater made the game-winning 43-yard field goal with eight seconds left as Detroit rallied to beat the Colts in Indianapolis. The final score was 39-35 after Detroit forced a safety against the Colts on the last play of the game.

Elsewhere, the Buffalo Bills lost 13-7 to Baltimore.

The race for the A-L East division is even closer now. The Boston Red Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays 11-8 yesterday, while in Detroit, the Orioles got past the Tigers 3-1. Boston now leads the division by two games with Toronto and Baltimore tied for second.

In the CFL -- Chatham native Andy Fantuz caught two passes for 13 yards in the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 33-21 loss to Toronto Argonauts.

In Jr. C preseason hockey -- the Blenheim Blades squeaked past the Dresden Kings 4-3 while the Essex 73's beat Amherstburg 4-1.

New military crosswalk in Sarnia to be unveiled

As part of a partnership between the Sarnia Legion Branch 62 and City of Sarnia, an unveiling ceremony will be held at the corner of Christina Street and Wellington Street on Sunday, June 7, at 2 p.m.

Two men arrested in Tashmoo Ave. standoff

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
