People in and around Windsor and Chatham-Kent (CK) may recognize the Edmonton Oilers' new goaltender coach.
Peter Aubry was hired by the team on July 14, replacing Dustin Schwartz, who held the position for over a decade.
Aubry was born and raised in Windsor.
"(My family) loves the area. My sister and mom still live there," he said.
Aubry explained that his wife and daughter love Windsor, so they try to visit at least once a year during the offseason.
As for CK, Aubry started his playing career in Chatham.
He first played for the Chatham Micmacs as a 16-year-old in the 1993-94 season. After joining the Sarnia Steeplejacks for a season, Aubry was traded back to Chatham.
"I remember being traded there, and they had track suits and winter jackets ready for us. It made us feel wanted," he said.
In his two seasons, Aubry suited up in 40 games. Though it wasn't a long part of his hockey career, Aubry noted his time in Chatham is something he still remembers fondly.
As for the job, Aubry joins one of the best teams in the NHL. The Oilers were able to make the Stanley Cup finals in each of the last two seasons, but ended up losing each time to the Florida Panthers.
Aubry said he understands there's a lot of pressure on him to help the team's goalies, Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard, reach their potential.
"It goes with the territory, that's what makes the job so enticing," he explained.
Aubry spent the last two seasons as an associate coach with Nebraska-Omaha in the NCAA. Before that, he spent eight seasons as the Chicago Blackhawks' developmental goaltending coach and the Rockford IceHogs' goaltending coach.
