Police Seize Contraband Cigarettes

RCMP have seized over 200,000 contraband cigarettes and a pick-up truck following a traffic stop on Hwy. 401 near London.

Police say a 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche was stopped on the 401 near Colonel Tablot Rd. for a traffic violation on December 11. Officers noticed the passenger and cargo area of the vehicle were packed with contraband cigarettes.

The cigarettes and truck were seized by the RCMP. A 46-year-old Ohsweken man is facing charges of possessing unstamped tobacco.

He will appear in court at a later date.

The RCMP says the illicit tobacco market is a burden to Canadians and directly supports organized crime and reduces government revenues by millions of dollars each year.
