Hamilton Woman Makes Next Round to Mars

A Hamilton woman has made it through another round of cuts toward a mission to Mars in 2024.

Karen Cumming is one of only 100 people left from an initial list of more than 200,000 applicants for the one-way trip via Mars One, privately funded by a Dutch organization.

Cumming tells Blackburn News that everyone is calling her brave but it doesn't feel that way to her. She says she's simply following her curiosity. The 53-year-old also says there's a lot of disbelief that the mission will actually launch as planned.

Cumming says the next step is to get all 100 finalists into a room together to see how well they cooperate and problem-solve. A reality show based on the process is in the works.
