Extreme Cold To Stay

Environment Canada says despite a brief weekend thaw, the extreme cold temperatures are here to stay.

Temperatures with the wind chill have been near the -30C mark. Ontario is being hit the hardest by the arctic air, with temperatures 8 degrees below normal for this time of the year.

This February is tracking towards becoming the coldest February in over 100 years.

"We have to look back to 1885 to find something comparable," says Warning Preparedness Meteorologist Peter Kimbell . "We don't see an end to it. The pattern is locked in for a high pressure ridge over the Pacific Ocean and a trough over North America and until that changes we will have more cold weather. It ill get gradually warmer in March because of the sunshine, but it may take a while."

Both the Elgin-St. Thomas and Middlesex-London Health Unit have issued Cold Weather Alerts.

Health officials are asking that if you are planning on heading outside you dress accordingly.
