Commercial Greenhouse Plans Not Finalized

The proposal for a 40 acre greenhouse in London's south end is moving along slower than anticipated.

The unnamed company approached the city about a 50 acre parcel of land along Wellington Rd. months ago, but officials say the necessary zoning changes and site plan proposals have yet to be submitted.

It is expected the operation would employ 40 to 60 people during construction. Once it is built the company would employ between 150 and 250 people.

The initial plan was to build the greenhouse near the corner of Scotland Dr. and Wellington Rd., but the company has since changed its mind and moved the site to the corner of Manning Dr. and Wellington Rd.

Additional details about the project and the potential leasing of the city owned land were anticipated by staff and the end of January, but those did not materialize.

London only has one commercial greenhouse operation right now, but the large-scale operations are common in the Leamington and Kingsville area.

A report detailing the slow progress will come before councillors at the Corporate Services Committee this week.
