Man Charged After Officers Assaulted

A 33-year-old man from the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation is facing a slew of charges after he allegedly rammed two police cruisers with his pickup truck.

Investigators say officers stopped the man on Maitland Rd. near Three Fires Rd. on the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation around 8:20pm on April 6. He was wanted on outstanding warrants.

It was then that he fled, driving his pickup truck away quickly and dangerously, police say. He hit two police cruisers, injuring one officer.

Police eventually stopped the truck on Ball Park Rd., the man inside tried to run away, but was taken down and arrested.

Ernest French, 33, of Chippewas of the Thames First Nation faces three charges of flight while pursued by a peace officer, two charges of assault with a weapon, one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, resisting a peace officer, failing to comply with recognizance and driving while under suspension.

He will appear in a London court to answer to the charges.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
