Non-Confidence Debates At Western

A special meeting of the Western University Senate this afternoon could seal the fate of President Amit Chakma.

22 senators petitioned for the meeting to debate non-confidence in Chakma, and in the chair of the Board of Governors, Chirag Shah.

The senators say Chakma's acceptance of $440,000 in lieu of taking a sabbatical shows a, "gross error in judgment and lack of understanding of the priorities" at Western, in a time of budgetary cutbacks.

Shah's future is in question because the senators say he supported Chakma's contract and the big payout. Today's decisions will go to the Board of Governors who meet on April 23.

Today's meeting, at 1:30pm, is the first special meeting of the senate since 1989.
