Institute For Mental Health Care Gets Boost From BMO

The St. Joseph's Parkwood Institute for Mental Health is getting a $150,000 boost from the Bank of Montreal.

A courtyard in the centre of the Wellington Rd. facility will be named after BMO.

"Half of our patients are here involuntarily, so they're not allowed to leave the building until they're a bit better as far as their illness is concerned. So, having the ability within the building to be able to outdoors is really wonderful," says President and CEO of St. Joseph's Health Care Dr. Gillian Kernaghan. "Having a big corporation like BMO come out and speak about mental illness and speak about supporting mental illnesses sends a great message to the community living with mental illnesses that they are not second class citizens anymore."

The 153 bed institute opened in November, with all staff and patients relocating from the site on Highbury Ave. It treats patients of all ages with severe mental illnesses.
