West Nile Virus Found In Horse

Health officials in Elgin County say a horse has tested positive for the West Nile Virus.

The horse is the second to test positive for the virus in Ontario this year, and the first in Elgin County since 2004.

The Elgin St. Thomas Health Unit says it will continue to monitor for the presence of West Nile Virus through its mosquito trapping program, although it says it has not yet found a mosquito with West Nile this year.

It's also reminding residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites by wearing long sleeves and pants in the evening and night hours, and by using insect repellant containing deet.

The health unit also asks that residents remove any standing water from their properties.
