Former Teacher Facing Sex Charges

A London man, whose prior conviction on child pornography charges led to his wife being reassigned from a principal position to an administrative job at the Thames Valley District School Board in 2013, is now facing accusations he sexually assaulted a student when he was a teacher in Barrie.

Barrie OPP announced Friday morning that David Carswell, 61, had been was arrested and charged after an investigation that began in September. Police say they received a complaint about the sexual assault of a child and after an investigation involving the Child Sexual Exploitation Unit, it was determined the allegations dated back to September 2004 through June 2005 when Carswell was a teacher in Barrie.

He is charged with one count of sexual assault, one count of sexual interference, and one count of sexual exploitation.

In 2013, Linda Carswell was scheduled to become principal at Stoney Creek Elementary School in London. But after parents raised concerns about David Carswell's 2009 conviction on child pornography charges, she was reassigned to the board office.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
