SIU Investigating Rollover Crash

Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after a rollover crash on Hwy. 401 in London.

The Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police says on Saturday around 6:38pm, officers responded to the eastbound lanes of the highway near Wellington Rd., after receiving a complaint about a driver.

Officers stopped a vehicle near the area and intended to perform a roadside screening test, when the driver fled the scene at a high rate of speed. The officers did not pursue the vehicle.

A short distance away at Veterans Memorial Pkwy., the officers were signaled by bystanders after the vehicle ran off the road and rolled over.

A 40-year-old man, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, has been taken to hospital with serious injuries, including numerous broken bones.

The OPP has since contacted the province’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) which will be investigating the incident. The SIU conducts criminal investigations into circumstances involving police that have resulted in serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault.
