Daycare Fire Causes $500K Damage

Damage is estimated at $500,000 following a fire at a daycare west of London.

Roughly 50 firefighters from Middlesex Centre fire stations in Delaware, Coldstream and Arva were called to the blaze at the Kilworth Children's Centre on Enterprise Dr. around 5:50pm Sunday.

"When crews arrived there was smoking showing from the roof, and heavy black smoke within the units," says Acting Fire Chief Mark Rennison. "We were able to make an approach and break in through one of the doors. We contained the fire to the most southernly unit."

Rennison says the fire was relatively slow burning and may have burned for hours before it was noticed.

"We did have to cut a hole in the roof to make sure it hadn't spread any further than we thought," says Rennison. "That was the biggest challenge. We were able to knock the fire down within an hour. We were able to contain it to the daycare."

Fire officials were back on scene Monday investigating the cause of the fire. It is not believed to be suspicious.
