House Fire Causes $400K In Damages

A misuse of extension cords is to blame for a house fire in London.

The London Fire Department says on Friday around 11:51pm, firefighters attended the blaze at 3545 Morgan Cres. to find the home filled with smoke.  The basement of the house was engulfed in flames before fire crews arrived, which caused structural damage that extended up the walls to the first and second floors.

No one was home at the time of the fire and there were no injuries.

A fire inspector was called to the scene and determined that the cause of the fire was electrical.

Fire officials say extension cords and a power bar were strung together in the basement. An electric heater was also plugged into the power bar, along with other electrical items which caused the fire.

Damage to the home and contents is estimated at around $400,000.

The fire department is reminding residents to be careful when using extension cords. They are temporary wiring only, and only one item should be plugged in at a time. Be especially careful when using extension cords with heavy draw appliances like space heaters.
