London Jobless Rate Falls

The unemployment rate for London-St. Thomas fell last month, but not because more people found jobs.

The jobless rate was an even 7% in May, down from 7.3% in April. But figures from Statistics Canada show the local labour force shrunk by 1,600 last month. The area also experienced the loss of 800 jobs.

Nationally, the unemployment rate fell to 6.9% as the country saw an increase of 13,800 jobs. The drop in the jobless rate was largely the result of a boost of 30,200 jobs in the public sector.

In Ontario, the jobless rate dropped to 6.6% from 7% in April.
