Fire Destroys South London Barn

A barn in south London has been destroyed by fire.

London firefighters were called to the blaze at a farm on Wilton Grove Rd. near Old Victoria Rd. after 1pm on Thursday.

A neighbour says he saw light smoke coming from the structure that is used to house large hay bales when he went to get his mail. Minutes later the building was overcome by flames.

Fortunately, no one was hurt in the blaze.

The cause has not been determined but stacked hay bales have been known to spontaneous combust due to internal heating of the bales. Heating occurs when hay is baled too green due to the plant's internal moisture or sap content being too high.
