Majors Clinch Pennant In Tie-Breaker

The London Majors are the Intercounty Baseball League's top seed heading into the playoffs.

London clinched the pennant with a 4-0 win over the Kitchener Panthers Monday night in a one-game tie-breaker at Labatt Park. It was the fifth time in league history the pennant was won in a tie-breaker and the first since 1997.  The tie-breaker game was forced after Kitchener beat Brantford Sunday night.

It was a pitchers' duel, with London's Cory Hammond and Kitchener's Matt McGovern going toe-to-toe and the game remaining scoreless until the seventh.

The Majors' Byron Reichstein led off with a line drive single to left field and then went to third on Michael Ambrose's double. Majors's first baseman Brett Sabourin then ripped a single to left to send Reichstein home.

London added three more runs in the eighth when Reichstein hit a two-run double off the wall in left-centre field and came around to score on LeJon Baker's single. RJ Fuhr had two hits and a run for London as well.

London will face the Guelph Royals in the first round of IBL playoffs, while Kitchener will take on the Hamilton Cardinals.
