Inquest Called Into EMDC Inmate Death

A coroner's inquest has been called into the death of an Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre inmate.

Jamie High, 40, died on December 23, 2014. He had been found unresponsive in his cell and efforts by jail staff to revive him were unsuccessful. He was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to a release from the Regional Supervising Coroner for West Region, the inquest will examine the events surrounding High's death and the jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

The date and location of the inquest have not yet been announced. Dr. Elizabeth Urbantke will preside as Inquest Coroner.

An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.
