Mould Concerns Spark Closure Of Ekcoe Central Public School

The summer break has become a little longer for students at a Glencoe public school.

The Thames Valley District School Board says Ekcoe Central Public School will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday because of continuing concerns about mould in classrooms.

The board says the school won't re-open until independent consultants determine it is safe for students and staff.

The mould was first discovered by staff in late August. Since then, environmental consultants, professional cleaners and school board staff have worked to clean the school and remove the mould. However, in a message to parents on its website, the school says "evidence of substances that may promote the growth of mould were found Tuesday morning after a thorough review by board staff, environmental consultants and teacher union representatives."

The mould, called Cladosporium, is a common surface species typically found on grass and soil.

Parents are being contacted and told to pick up their children. Teachers will be performing administrative work at Glencoe District High School.
