SIU Identifies Woman Who Died In Police Custody

The province’s police watch dog has released the name of a woman who died while in police custody.

The OPP in Elgin County say officers arrested a woman on outstanding warrants on Wednesday at 7pm. Once in custody, she went into medical distress. An ambulance was called to Elgin OPP headquarters, which then took the woman to hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The Special Investigations Unit has identified the woman as 39-year-old Debra Chrisjohn from Oneida Nation of the Thames.

Anyone who has information regarding this incident is asked to contact the SIU at 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU investigates incidents involving police where there has been a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Two men arrested in Tashmoo Ave. standoff

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
