A Colorado low tracking across southern Ontario dumped about 7 cm (3 in) of snow on Sarnia Friday night into Saturday morning.
With the temperature rising, light snow was expected to become patchy followed by ice pellets at mid day.
Environment Canada meteorologist Mark Schuster warned of the risk of some freezing drizzle as well during the afternoon.
The precipitation will change back to snow Saturday night when it gets colder again with a couple more centimetres of snow possible by Sunday morning. Winds will shift northwesterly with a low of minus 6 C.
Motorists are urged to drive carefully. The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) was reporting Saturday morning that highways 402, 40 and 21 North were snow covered to snow packed.
Plowing and salting operations are ongoing in the city.
Superintendent of Roads, Tony D'Agostini says main roads and bus routes are snow covered to track bare with icy and slippery sections. Side streets are snow covered and snow packed with icy and slippery conditions.
He says crews will continue to plow and salt main roads and bus routes after which the clearing of side streets will begin.
Residents are asked not to park on the road to facilitate snow removal.
Sidewalk plowing is underway and will continue throughout the day.
Motorists should adjust their travel plans accordingly and allow extra time to reach their destinations.
