Jobless Rate Unchanged In January

Statistics Canada says the unemployment rate in London didn't change last month from December.

It was 6.9% for the third month in a row.

The agency says 600 fewer people were working last month, but that was offset by 900 people leaving the labour force.

By comparison, Windsor's jobless rate was 5.4%.

Nationally, the economy added 48,300 net jobs, pulling down the Canadian unemployment rate just slightly to 6.8%. Adjusted to the same criteria, it was 5.7% compared to 4.8% in the U.S.

The national labour participation rate was 65.8%, so of those eligible to work in Canada, 34.2% were not working in January.

The Ontario unemployment rate remained static at 6.4%.

Calgary had the highest rate of unemployment in Canada in January at 9.8%.
