Veteran's Wish Provides Food Bank With Donations

A Korean War veteran's wish to help feed the less fortunate was granted as nearly 1,000 lbs of food was delivered to the London Food Bank.

George Browning, an 83-year-old resident at St. Joseph’s Parkwood Institute, was given the opportunity to fulfil a special dream or wish through the institute's Dreams and Wishes program. His wish was a simple but noble one, to give back to the London community.

“George has such a big heart and always looks out for people,” said Alida van Dijk, staff chaplain at Parkwood Institute. “His wish choice didn’t surprise anyone. He is always giving to others.”

To fulfil his wish, Browning organized a food drive, collecting non-perishable food items from staff and fellow residents. He collected 980 lbs and last week make the trip in person to deliver the massive donation to the food bank.

Browning was given a tour of the building on Leathorne St. and learned how things were sorted, stored, and provided to those in need. He was brought to tears as his daughter, Brenda, kicked in a $500 donation to the food bank in honour of Browning's late wife.

“I’ll tell you right now, I’m happy, so happy and so proud; not only for me, but for the people I’ve done the work for,” said Browning.
