Drunk Driver Who Killed London Woman Pleads Guilty

A Kitchener man who crashed his car into the back of another vehicle, killing a London woman and injuring her infant son, has pleaded guilty to five charges.

CTV Kitchener reports Ahmed Darwish entered the pleas in a Kitchener courtroom on Monday. He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm and refusing to provide a breath sample.

Darwish was behind the wheel of a Mercedes that slammed into the back of a car on Hwy. 7/8 just west of Kitchener on November 27, 2016. Londoner Susana Dumitru, 29, was in the back seat of that car. She was killed while her 2-month-old son suffered critical injuries. He was airlifted to hospital.

Dumitru's husband and mother-in-law were in the front seat. They were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

According to CTV Kitchener's report, court was told Darwish was driving at 214 km/h when the crash happened. Court also heard that he had open bottles of alcohol in his car, he was slurring his words when speaking with police, and that he refused 17 requests to provide a breath sample.

A date will be set for his sentencing on March 16.
