Charges Laid In Crash That Killed 17-Year-Old Near Vanastra

Two men are now facing charges in connection to a crash west of Vanastra that claimed the life a 17-year-old Clinton girl.

The Ontario Provincial Police say on Tuesday at around 4:35pm, a Chevrolet Malibu traveling south on Hwy. 4 (London Rd.) attempted to maneuver around stopped vehicles at 7th Ave., by passing on the gravel shoulder. However, the driver lost control and the vehicle re-entered the roadway where it was struck on the passenger side by an armoured truck.

The only passenger in the Malibu, 17-year-old Bethany Blanchard of Clinton, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have since determined that the Malibu had safety issues and was not fit to be on the road, and the driver of the vehicle had a suspended license.

The driver, 19-year-old Nicholas Dimmers of Goderich, has been charged with careless driving and driving while under suspension.

The registered owner of the Malibu, 19-year-old Zachery Fairbanks of Central Huron, has been charged with permitting operation of an unsafe vehicle.

Both men will appear in a Goderich court on May 2.
