Construction Brings More Hwy. 401 Closures

Motorists travelling to or from London overnight will have to deal with more closures on Hwy. 401.

According to the Ministry of Transportation, rolling closures in the east and westbound lanes at Veterans Memorial Parkway will take place Monday and Tuesday night beginning at 11pm.

The lanes will reopen the following mornings at 5am.

The closures are to allow for the placement of bridge girders at the Veterans Memorial overpass, which was demolished earlier this spring.

Construction of a new bridge should be completed in the fall, at which time on and off ramps to the roadway will re-open.

For the safety of construction crews, the highway speed has been lowered from 100 km/h to 80 km/h in the area. Provincial police, who will be assisting with the lane closures, are also enforcing the new lower speed limit. Fines for those caught speeding through construction zones when workers are presented are double the normal amount.

On Saturday night, a section of Hwy. 401 in Ingersoll was closed in both directions for 16 hours to allow for the demolition of the Hwy. 19 overpass. Construction of that bridge is also expected to be completed in the fall.
