Jobless Rate Drops To Ten Year Low

Despite losing 800 jobs in July, the jobless rate in the London region has hit a ten year low.

Statistics Canada figures released on Friday show the unemployment rate in the London-St. Thomas area fell to 5.6% last month, from 6% in June.

The nearly half percentage point drop comes as 2,100 people left the labour force. The previous month saw an even bigger number of people, 2,200, stop looking for work.

Nationally, the economy added nearly 11,000 jobs last month to bring the unemployment rate down to 6.3%, from 6.5% in June.

That is the country's lowest jobless numbers in nearly nine years.

The Ontario unemployment rate fell three notches to 6.1%. Across the province, 17,600 full-time jobs and 7,900 part-time jobs were added.
