Thousands Lose Power In Northwest London

London Hydro is blaming an equipment failure for a power outage that affected thousands of customers on Thursday morning.

The lights went out just before 9am in an area bordered by Oxford St., Sunningdale Rd., Richmond St., and Denfield Rd. London

Hydro spokesperson Nancy Hutton says crews were doing some work on Western Rd. just north of Oxford St. when there was an equipment failure, which resulted in the power outage.

A witness told BlackburnNews.com that it appeared a cherry picker touched a hydro wire, sending sparks flying.

"I was terrified-sparks and electrical zapping noises, workers fleeing for their lives. I drove to work at Western and saw ambulances accompanied by police flying through campus to UH," the witness wrote in an email.

However, Hutton says there was no contact between the cherry picker and the hydro wire. She says the workers did move away from the scene quickly and there were no injuries.

All customers had their power restored by noon.
