Man Killed In Train, Pickup Crash

A man is dead after his pickup truck collided with a freight train east of London.

Oxford OPP say the pickup was heading north on the 13th Line in Zorra Township near Thamesford when it was hit by a westbound CP train around 9:30am on Thursday.

The driver, who was the only person in the truck, was pronounced dead at the scene. No one aboard the train was injured. Safety measures in place at the rail crossing were working at the time of the crash, according to police.

"It's a flat crossing with visible signal lights that were active at the time," said Constable Stacey Culbert.

She would not speculate on whether the pickup was trying to beat the train.

"There is no indication right now. We are still working with all of the evidence and seeing where it leads us," said Culbert. "The investigation is in its infancy right now."

Canadian Pacific police are assisting OPP with the investigation.

The 13th Line and 15th Line between Road 74 and Dundas St. were closed while the train blocked the rail crossings. The train has since moved.
