Mustangs Set Record In 81-3 Victory Over Axemen

The Western Mustangs topped the Acadia Axemen 81-3 in the 2017 U SPORTS Uteck Bowl on Saturday, to break a 14-year-old record.

Prior to Saturday, the most points scored by one team in a U SPORTS national semifinal was 60 points in 2003 by the Saint Mary’s Huskies.

Chris Merchant led the Mustangs with 200 yards in the air and was named the Uteck Bowl Most Valuable Player.  Trey Humes and Cedric Joseph also had 272 yards combined on the ground.

The Mustangs managed 689 yards of offense, which included 451 yards rushing. The total surpasses Western's regular season average of 309.

Saturday marked the second straight win for the Mustangs, after they eliminated the Laurier Golden Hawks 75-32 last weekend in the Yates Cup.

The Mustangs will now head to Hamilton to face Laval for the 53rd ArcelorMittal Dofasco Vanier Cup on November 25.
