Slight Dip In Local Jobless Rate

2017 ended with a dip in the unemployment rate for the London area.

Figures from Statistics Canada show the London-St. Thomas jobless rate fell slightly to 6.2% last month, down from 6.3% in November. The drop comes as 700 jobs were created, with 700 people entering the local labour force.

The area's labour participation rate remained among the lowest in Canada and the worst in Ontario, sitting at 59.9%.

Nationally, the unemployment rate dropped to 5.7% in December. That is its lowest level in more than 40 years. According to Stats Canada 78,600 net new positions were added to the economy last month, including 23,700 full-time jobs.

The Ontario jobless rate saw little change, holding steady at 5.5%
